2. Why This Matters

We’ve grown. Now we need to grow together.
Over the last fifteen years, junior hockey at Sevenoaks has gone from Sunday mornings and a couple of teams… to nearly 500 juniors on the pitch every week.

There’s training most nights. Matches every weekend. Camps, masterclasses, indoor, outreach and international tours. Hockey isn’t just for Sundays anymore — it’s a seven-day-a-week operation.

And it's brilliant. We’re developing players, building friendships, giving kids something special to belong to. We’ve become a huge part of local life.

But here's the reality: that growth brings strain.

Why we’re making a change
From the outside, things might seem to run like clockwork. Training sessions happen. Matches are organised. Players have a good time.

But here’s the thing: that smooth experience is only possible because a small handful of people are working flat out behind the scenes, some of them effectively doing a second full-time job to keep it all spinning.

That’s not sustainable. It’s not fair. And it’s not how a community club should run.

We’ve reached the point where we need more families to be part of the effort — not because things have gone wrong, but because we can’t keep asking the same few to carry the load.

We're not asking for a massive shift. But we are saying: we need everyone to play a small part, so the load is shared fairly. That’s where the Member Contribution Programme (MCP) comes in.

What's at stake
Without a change, we risk:

  • Burnout for our current volunteers
  • Cutting back training sessions or matchdays
  • Having to forfeit matches if we don’t have enough umpires
  • Failing to meet regulatory requirements
  • Having to raise fees across the board — which would price some families out

By asking all families to support in a way that suits them — giving time or contributing financially — we can protect what we’ve built, and keep fees flat for a third year running.

Fair, flexible, and future-facing
We know families are busy. We’re not asking for a huge weekly commitment (unless that suits you). Just something.

The Member Contribution Programme gives three clear and flexible ways to do your bit. Whether you give your time regularly, pitch in for a few hours across the season, or opt out and support financially — it all helps.

The key is that everyone contributes.

This isn’t just about admin
It’s about building the club we all want to be part of; where parents chat on the side lines, where children see grown-ups pitching in, where nobody feels like they’re carrying the whole thing on their own.

We are, proudly, a club built on community.

Let’s keep it that way.
