Sevenoaks came into the game off the back of a good win away at Brighton last weekend, and the boys were raring to go under the lights against an unbeaten Southgate side.

The game got off to a quick start with both sides seeing chances early on, but neither were able to capitalise and the game remained at 0-0 throughout the first quarter. Sevenoaks kept their composure into the second and some good build up play was rewarded in the last play of the half, as a well worked short corner routine was placed into the bottom right corner by Ben Allberry to give Oaks the lead going into the break.

Southgate looked to start the second half on the front foot, pushing the intensity immediately after the break. As players began to fatigue, errors were starting to creep in and a flurry of cards were awarded to both sides. Notably Captain Chris Barker saw a ten minute yellow following a coming together, the Southgate forward in question theatrically throwing themselves to the floor in what was universally agreed by everyone present bar the umpires to be one of the most pathetic and embarrassing moments to have ever taken place on a hockey pitch. Unfortunately, the final quarter saw defensive errors from Sevenoaks in the D that gave Southgate the opportunity to equalise from a short corner, and then minutes later take the lead for the first time through another well taken flick.

With Sevenoaks chasing the game in the final quarter, a Southgate forward got onto the end of a counter attack and calmly slotted the ball home, making the game 3-1 and maintaining their unbeaten record. The final score did not reflect the performance and there were plenty of positives to be taken from the game. Oaks will look to finish strongly in the final game before Christmas at Old Loughtonians next week.
