The sun shone down at Hollybush as Sevenoaks took the field against Bath Buccaneers on Sunday. Those members of the onlookers that travelled away for the first leg of this fixture sensed that something was owed - following a cruel ending for Sevenoaks.
The boys in purple started full of spunk which was ably translated into an impressive amount of early possession and subsequent pressure. A number of sorties were made onto the decks of the Buccaneers, but to no avail. Sevenoaks were however rewarded with three short corners. Number one’s injection went awry. Number two saw a dragflick fired wide. Number three was just right, Andrew Ross (sponsored by Felsted School) fired low and to the right.
Half time. 1-0 Oaks.
A one goal margin is often a tricky lead to defend with such time left in the game, with the danger of teams attempting to defend a lead. No such reaction from Sevenoaks. Dominance continued to be asserted throughout the half. Once more, pressure lead to a penalty corner which was deposited into the upper right hand side of the goal by Andrew Ross, taking the score to 2-0. Shortly after, a well worked move down the left hand side saw the ball fall to Ali Taylor (sponsored by MIDiA Research and New Beacon School) who has made a habit of scoring in tight spaces over the last few weeks and this instance was no exception. 3-0 Sevenoaks.
A momentary lapse of concentration from Sevenoaks did lead to a goal mouth scramble which was ably swatted away by Richard Potton (sponsored by Martin Day). Perhaps life in Bath yet ahead of the fourth quarter.
Sevenoaks controlled the final quarter of the game well and will have been frustrated not to have widened the margin. Had the score line been different, missed chances may have been more costly. Nonetheless, an imperious performance, a well earned 3 points and ever more pressure piled on close neighbors - Oxted.
