In the second round of the EH cup, Sevenoaks U18s took on Canterbury who possessed many familiar faces with some players having played against each other since U8s.
In the opening quarter Sevenoaks started strongly winning an early short corner, unfortunately Nemo’s flick was charged down strongly. Although Oaks were dominant Canterbury looked dangerous on the counter attack with one coming close via a 1 on 1. Oaks continued to apply pressure eventually breaking the deadlock through a well placed drag flick into the bottom right by Nemo. With the momentum in oaks favour they doubled their lead through Cameron rifling a shot into the roof of the net. However, Canterbury responded well with their forwards looking dangerous, eventually halving the lead through a drag flick. With half time approaching Canterbury equalised again though a drag flick this time into the top left corner.
After half time, oaks started slowly with Canterbury on top. Canterbury’s dominance resulted in them taking the lead with Brown Lea smashing a backhand into the top corner, leaving Oaks speechless. The third quarter fizzled out with Canterbury heading into the fourth 3-2 up. Koen Van Velsen, our influential coach since U8s, gave a rousing speech helping to boost Oaks morale. This led to Oaks starting strongly creating chances but not capitalising on opportunities. With tempers flaring and cards being shown Oaks equalised through a drag flick by our captain, leader, legend Paul van Velsen. With tension rising the last five minutes became scrappy with both teams having chances. In the dying seconds, Canterbury turned the ball over which resulted in them burgling a goal though a topped shot.
This defeat meant Oaks have been knocked out of the EH Cup with many players (Paddy Walton, Ben Baillache, Paul Van Velsen, Tomasz Morris, Tom Beadle, Lewis Whilcher, Tom Rodenhurst and George Fisher) ,playing their last junior games for Sevenoaks.
The team would like to say a huge thank you to Koen Van Velsen for coaching us throughout the year and Jeanette Dymond for organising everything as manager!
