Purple Patch.

Sevenoaks M5s dug out a crucial win away at Folkestone.

After a week of anxiety about getting a full team to travel to Folkestone on Saturday morning, the M5s managed to send a bare 11 to the 11am away fixture. The team had to call players out of retirement, beg, borrow and steal from other teams and demand a 110% performance from everyone on the pitch to make up for the lack of players on the bench.

Sevenoaks strategically dominated the 1st half with more shots on goal and a sterling performance from Aidan Mylroi in goal blocking some shots that were destined for the back of the net. The 1st half score remained 0-0 which was a testament to the work-rate by the team.

Richard Young, who was stand-in captain, gave a rutting speech at half time keeping up the morale of a team with tired legs.

The first goal on the scoresheet came when Richard Bidgood sent a bobbler into the D finding James Proser's stick on the P-spot and after a bit of trickery, James wrong-footed the defender and found the backboard making it 1-0 to Sevenoaks.

The deadlock was broken but the goal gave Folkestone Optimists some motivation and after winning a short corner from a Sevenoaks team, who were down to 10 men from a green card, controversially converted the short corner off a rebound into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Sevenoaks never gave up and were determined to get a result. Through the tireless pressing from Toby Stewart and Dan Wheeler, they managed to push forward and quickly win themselves a short corner, Charlie Monks was able to hold strong in the D encouraging a Folkestone Error.

Andrew Barber walked with purpose to the top of the D for the short corner routine. Opting to go for a straight hit, the rebound off the keeper's pads ricocheted to the feet of Darren Wenham who bamboozled the opposition and slotted home a goal putting Sevenoaks back in front.

There were a nervous final 15 minutes with mistakes starting to set in from a tired team who hadn't taken a break but a fearless defensive performance from Matt Pullen and Jon Higgs kept the relentless advances off and when the final whistle blew, an enormous sense of achievement was shared by the whole team.

Securing the 3 points gives M5s more points then they won all season last year and with some very winnable fixtures this side of Christmas, it puts the team in a strong position to contend for the No.1 spot in the league.'
