Sevenoaks ladies 3s extended their unbeaten run to eight games with another impressive performance against Blackheath’s first XI. With both teams evenly matched and playing a high standard of attacking hockey, this proved to be an absorbing encounter that could have gone either way. In the first half, both teams created excellent chances that just lacked that finishing touch or bit of composure in the final third. The second half proved to be more of the same, but with a sharper cutting edge as the two sides vied to make the breakthrough. Oaks keeper Karen Chapman made a number of quality saves as Blackheath also hit the post and had a shot cleared off the line by defender Emma Botes. Chances also fell to Oaks with the best an Amanda Bishop penalty corner shot that was deflected just wide by Kelsey McKenna. But it was Blackheath that struck first with a well-worked attack. All credit to Sevenoaks though as they stuck to their task and continued to play open, high tempo hockey. Showing great character, the team battled all the way to the end…and got their just reward. With seconds left on the clock, Emma Patel skilfully brought the ball out of defence, slipping it into central midfield where Anna Healey split the Blackheath defence with an incisive pass that sent Kelsey McKenna scampering clear on the left. With Sevenoaks’ forwards piling upfield on the overload, McKenna drew the keeper before calmly sliding the ball square to Georgi Samuel to apply the finishing touch. With the final whistle going as Oaks celebrated, it was the away team that came off the pitch much the happier of the two sides.
