A patchy Oaks performance resulted in dropped points against 11th placed Ashford L2s in a see-saw game at Holly Bush Lane. Despite setting a fast-paced tempo from the start, Oaks struggled to find a way through Ashford’s packed midfield and defence in open play. No surprise then that the home side’s opening goal came from a smartly taken penalty corner strike from captain Anna Healey. Pushing forwards to build on their lead, a quick turnover allowed Ashford back into the game as their speedy forwards took advantage of a rare counter attack. As the half continued, Oaks began to exert more control and deservedly retook the lead when team terrier Cailyn McKenna created and scored a fine individual effort. A frenetic second half ensued with both sides contributing to a good quality game. But it was the home side’s lapse in concentration in giving away possession cheaply that allowed Ashford to hit back and then take the lead with two goals in quick succession. To Sevenoaks’ credit, the team never gave up and with midfielders Alex Sewell and Tegan Peterson showing great skill and pace to create openings, and full backs Emma Botes and Emma Holtshausen pushing on to provide width in attack, Oaks looked well capable of scoring again. A third goal duly came when Ashford failed to clear their lines and Georgi Samuel bundled the loose ball home to level the scores. A draw was a fair result but shows that Oaks will need to sharpen up to get points at table topping Holcombe next weekend.
