In a spirited contest at Radnor House, the Sevenoaks Acorns put in a valiant effort but were ultimately defeated 3-0 by a clinical Holcombe Harriers side. Despite the loss, the Acorns showcased strong defensive play, determined attacking moments, and were buoyed by vociferous support from the home crowd.
The first half saw Sevenoaks defend resolutely, with goalkeeper Pierre Smit producing a string of vital saves to keep the game scoreless. The defensive line of Gus Gouldstone—who made an impressive debut—Graeme Slater, Jeroen Schippers, and Lewis Richardson stood firm under pressure. Graeme’s composed and commanding performance earned him Man of the Match honours.
In midfield, player-coach Richard Young, along with Baxter Richardson and Simon Richardson, worked tirelessly to dictate the pace of the game. Nicholas Baker displayed boundless energy, making crucial interceptions, while Ethan McKay dazzled with his silky skills, seamlessly connecting midfield and attack.
Simon faced early discipline trouble, receiving a green card 15 minutes into the match, sending him to the sin bin for two minutes. Shortly after returning to the field, Simon broke early on a defensive short corner, forcing him back to the halfway line.
Up front, forwards Lucas Schippers, Howard McKay, and Oli Bel caused problems for the Holcombe defence, particularly in the second half. Lucas made numerous leading runs, which forced Holcombe into some last-ditch tackles, keeping the pressure on the visitors.
Despite their efforts, the Acorns fell behind 15 minutes into the second half after a misplaced pass from Jeroen allowed Holcombe to capitalise. Just five minutes later, another defensive miscommunication saw Holcombe double their advantage. Sevenoaks continued to battle, with Lewis and Gus making key interceptions, and Baxter coming close to pulling one back, narrowly missing the left post on a short corner.
Richard and his side remained organised and patient, playing some clever aerials from the back, but Holcombe sealed the victory with a third goal, scored with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Special thanks go to Pete and Mark for their expert umpiring, ensuring a well-officiated match. Julie Schippers, the team’s manager, kept things running smoothly, managing the subs bench with precision throughout the game. The players appreciated her efforts both on and off the field, especially when she provided her signature moreish brownies during the post-match debrief.
Although the result didn’t go their way, the Acorns can take plenty of positives from the match and look forward to building on this performance in their upcoming fixtures.
